Tractor for a micro-farm in Senegal

Background
Senegal loses thousands of young people every year who arrive in Europe by sea in the hope of finding work and a secure life. With this, the country loses a lot of potential in the process. Emigration is not only a challenge for economic development and social life, but many also risk their lives by migrating. To tackle this problem, we want to improve the situation of young adults in Senegal. Specifically, Africa Agriculture is dedicated to providing young adults with the opportunity to complete a formation and work in agriculture.

Agriculture remains a promising economic sector in Senegal. We want to make agriculture more attractive as a sector and thus offer young people alternative opportunities. That is why Africa Agriculture is launching a micro-farm to enable young adults to train and work in agriculture. A test phase has already been completed. The next step is to implement the project in practice, which requires a tractor. A tractor can considerably improve the training of young adults and the work of the micro-farm staff. Harvesting is made easier, time is saved and thus more young people can work in agriculture under good conditions.

The cost of a new tractor would be between 70'000-120'000 CHF. Since this is quite a high amount for us, we would like to buy a tractor second-hand. In the project region, second-hand tractors can be purchased for 40'000 CHF. With this first used tractor we can improve the training and work in agriculture. On one side, the young people learn how to use a tractor and can enlarge their practical skills. On the other side, a tractor will help to increase the agricultural yield and make the work more efficient. This is thus an important step in our micro farm project.

Food crises, strong population growth and high unemployment are major challenges in Senegal. Many young people in particular want to try their luck in Europe and accept the dangerous migration across the sea. But the strong migration is very damaging to the country's development. By training young people in agriculture and creating new jobs, they are offered new perspectives in the country. This makes a sustainable contribution to stemming migration and to the economic and social development of Senegal.
