Art therapy care for children
Project SummaryThe CHU Pzaga hospital in Madagascar offers the first art therapy programme for children and adolescents. The art therapy treatment helps the children and adolescents to cope with traumatic experiences. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, demand has risen sharply. Help us to finance the next two years!
Background
Art therapy is the oldest medicine in the world. The CHU Pzaga University Hospital in the regional capital Mahajanga is the first public institution in Madagascar to have an art therapy department. The department is primarily intended for child psychiatry patients. Art therapy is used to treat traumatic experiences caused for example by sexual harassment. It is also suitable for developmental disorders such as autism. The treatment is individually determined by a team of child and adolescent psychiatrists in order to meet the recovery of the children and adolescents in an individual way.
The art therapy department was made possible and initiated by a mental health project. Through this start-up funding, the art therapy department has been financed by the NGO Handicap (now: Humanité et inclusion) for the last five years. Premises were made available, renovated and working materials and support staff were financed. This has made it possible to guarantee continuous, high-quality art therapy treatment for children and young people from the Boeny region. During this time, several hundred children and young people were successfully cared for. Unfortunately, this funding has now come to an end and the project is currently only being continued through micro-donations and the voluntary commitment of the staff.

Idea
We would like to guarantee this valuable and unique offer of care for children and young people in this region for another two years. The money will be used to finance staff, material for the treatment and events (strengthening through communal experiences) for the children and young people concerned. We would also like to offer further training for the staff of the department. In addition, the financial means could be used to offer art therapy treatment to even more children and adolescents.
Through the donations, the offer can be further developed and in the long run become an integral part of the child and youth psychological treatment in the Boeny region and beyond. This further development is taking place with the support of the Ministry of Health, the Malagasy Association of Paediatricians (Somaped), local scientists from the University of Mahajanga as well as professional support from Germany and Switzerland.

Implementation
Continuity to ensure sustainable treatment goals
In order to be able to achieve treatment successes in the future as well, it is of utmost importance that the children and adolescents are able to attend art therapy treatment regularly and continuously. In order to be able to guarantee this, funding must be secured for the next two years.
Need for therapy increases due to the Covid-19 pandemic
Originally, the department was planned for a maximum of 15 children or adolescents. Recently, however, the demand for treatment has risen sharply, especially due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, 26 patients are currently being treated. This leads to a strong overload of the staff. The donations will be used to hire additional staff to ensure the best possible care for the traumatised children and adolescents.
Infrastructure expansion
The costs for the premises (incl. water and electricity) and parts of the wage costs of two employees are borne by the local university hospital (Ministry of Health). However, the building does not yet meet the requirements of art therapy care. Therefore, part of the donated money will be used to expand the building to meet the increased demand and to promote low-threshold access for the community.

Initiators
Dr BAKOHARILIVA Hasina Andrianarivony has built up and established the department and works in the art therapy department with an interprofessional team from therapy and nursing. Whenever possible, local artists are also involved. This intercultural approach strengthens the bond with the population.
