Safe Water Facilities for Children

Many thanks for your support, which meant we were able to complete the project successfully.
Project SummaryIn the villages of Chamanpalli and Jubli Nagar in India, there is a lack of proper water and sanitation facilities and lack of awareness regarding hygienic practices. Increased transmition of diseases and reinforcement of poverty are just some of the consequences. Help WDWS to raise awareness of the issues and install a water plant and purifier!

Background

The people in the villages of Chamanpalli and Jubli Nagar from Karimnagar district, Telangana state, India, are underdeveloped by illiteracy and lack of awareness. Thus, they suffer from various transmitted diseases (viral infections) due to unsafe water and bad sanitation facilitation.
The local government is providing free education and mid-day meals for poor children, but there is no education given on hygienic practices. Therefore, there is not enough knowledge on healthy habituates, safe sanitary methods, eco-friendly activities and healthy drinking water practices. Due to the lack of these facilities, the situation of families affected by poverty is additionally exabercated.

Idea

Women Development Welfare Society (WDWS) wants to address these issues with the improvement of current sanitation facilities and awareness-raising activities. After conducting a detailed survey, the two villages of Chamanpalli and Jubli Nagar have been selected for the implementation of this project.
WDWS wants to raise awareness in the village's communities, the concerned school staff and school children about water related diseases, benefits of pure drinking water, using safe WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) Methods. Furthermore, water saving policy are to be implemented.
Moreover, WDWS wants to improve the sanitation facilities by installing water plant for one village (Chamanpalli) and one purifier installation for one school (ZPHS – Jublinagar village).

Implementation

The project will be implemented in three phases.
Project Phases
Stage 1: Awareness Raising with Workshops
Workshops will be conducted including the following topics: personal hygiene, safe sanitary methods, safe disposal and environmental conservation. In addition, ‘Clean-up days’, puppet plays and video training will be there with the school children.
Stage 2: Healthy School Environment
As part of this project, WDWS will install a water purifier in one school and build wash & drinking area panels. Our team along with school staff will train the children how to use the panels and form a water management committee with children.
Stage 3: Pure drinking water for Chamanpalli village
The selected area Chamanpalli village water contains fluoride. For drinking purpose, many people use water tanks which cost around Rs.25/- each. For cooking, generally  borewell water is used which contains fluoride. Many poor families use this water also for drinking, since they cannot afford water tanks. To improve that, one water plant will be installed for this village.
Stage 4: Outreach to Families and Communities
In all stages of the implementation of the proposed project, parents and teachers’ associations will be involved. To strengthen the activities in the schools, simultaneously a public awareness campaign on sanitation and hygiene will be implemented.
With this Crowddonating, the following costs should be covered:

  • awareness raising programs: CHF 450

  • water purifier and wash – drinking area panels for 1 school: CHF 2'850

Total donation target: 3'300 CHF

Successful implementation of the "Safe drinking water for children" project - A look at the progress made

Good news! Your contribution has been instrumental in realising the project. Here is the progress made and the positive impact.

Thank you once again for your support in realising the "Clean Water for Children" project. With your help we were able to:

  • Organising an educational event to inform the children about water-borne diseases and the benefits of drinking water.
  • Installing a 250 litre mini water system with fully automatic motors in the school.
  • Following child safety guidelines and earthing the power supply to protect against short circuits.
  • To save water and protect the environment, waste water has been diverted to the vegetable garden.
  • The children actively participate in the garden activities, which brings them closer to the environment.
  • Children's committees have been formed to ensure that no water is wasted when filling the bottles and to monitor the children to ensure that they drink at least 4-6 litres during school hours (7 hours).
  • The technician of the system explained the system to the responsible persons and the heads of the children's committees in order to maintain the system.

We have successfully implemented the project and hereby present you with some photos that clearly show the changes.

A special thanks goes to the children and especially to the boy Sai (9th grade) who was damaged by the fluoride (can no longer walk with his legs). Thanks to your support, all the children and their parents are now very happy.

Thank you very much.

With kind regards,

Mrs Jamuna

WDWS team visits school in Chamanpalli for water supply improvements

Our WDWS team recently visited the school in Chamanpalli. The water supply situation is alarming, with children suffering from unsanitary conditions. Learn how we plan to bring about change to promote health and education.

We would like to tell you about our recent visit to the school in Chamanpalli village, which our team from WDWS conducted a few days ago. The main goal of our visit was to get an accurate picture of the current water supply situation on site.

Unfortunately, the current situation on site is extremely worrying. Of particular concern to us is the slippery access to the water stations, which results in children frequently falling and sustaining injuries. In addition, the heavily soiled washing area poses a serious risk as it fosters disease and is particularly concerning for children's health. Unfortunately, this area also serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The cooking area for lunch also has hygienic deficiencies.

The children suffer due to this insufficient access to clean water. This not only affects their regular attendance at school, but also poses a great challenge to the teachers.

In view of this situation, we request your support for the construction of an adequate washing area, which would make an enormous contribution to the health and education of these children. We have already prepared some model proposals for the construction of such a washing area, which can be seen in the photos.

We are convinced that the implementation of these measures will help to improve the living conditions of the children in Chamanpalli in a sustainable way. Your support would not only protect their health, but also significantly increase their educational opportunities. We are grateful for your attention and hope for a successful cooperation to bring about these much need.
