Restoration of Magamba Nature Forest Reserve in Tansania

Many thanks for your support, which meant we were able to complete the project successfully.
Project SummaryThe Magamba Nature Forest Reserve increases the region's biodiversity and serves as water catchment and electricity source for the local communities. Several wildfires had burnt parts of the forest reserve. CYDO wants to restore these parts by planting 1'250'000 indigenous trees. Help us!

Background

Magamba Nature Forest Reserve is the only Nature Forest Reserves located in Western Usambara Mountains found between Lushoto District Council and Korogwe District Council in Tansania. The forests are owned and managed by central government of Tanzania and serves as soil protection, hosts eco-tourism activities, produces electricity through hydroelectric power and is home for hundreds of species. Moreover, the Nkundei village, where part of the forest reserve lies, has a source of water in it which supplies water to three villages.
The part of Magamba Nature Forest Reserve in Nkundei village has been faced by wildfire for two consecutive years dated 2021/2022 and 2022/2023. The wildfires were caused by human economic activities such as local honey harvesting practices and cutting trees to get fuel wood.

Idea

The aim of this project is to restore burnt parts of the Magamba Nature Forest Reserve by planting a total of 1'250'000 indigenous trees, e.g. Rauvolvia caffra and Albizia Albida. To avoid monotony, more than eleven different indigenous tree species will be planted. This project is going to be conducted at Nkundei Village that is among the 21 villages surrounding the Magamba Nature Forest reserve.
Through the restoration of the Magamba Nature Forest Reserve, the following improvements are to be seen in the region:

  • restored biodiversity

  • increased awareness among the local community about environment conservation

  • protected water reservoirs

  • reduced carbon emissions

  • created 50 direct and 280 indirect jobs through the communities' participation in the project implementation.

Implementation

The indigenous trees will be purchased from the local nursery. The local community will be engaged in the project, e.g. in clearing weeds to prepare the concerned burnt parts, transporting the trees to the site. Then, the tree plantation will take place.
CYDO will take care of the documentation and monitoring of the tree plantation and the care afterwards for three years consecutively.
With the donation goal of 1'000 CHF, the following expenses can be covered:

  • Payment to the villagers who will get the part-time employment in the implementation of the project

  • Planting of 2,000 young trees.

Initiators

The initiator of this project is Changamoto Youth Development Organization (CYDO), a non-governmental organization founded in 2011 in Tansania.
Our main goal is to support the youth in Tansania in their efforts to engage for environment conservation and social development.
CYDO has already been involved in tree plantation projects in the past. More than 126'680 native trees were planted at Mkussu Forest Reserve and over 5'400 fruit trees at 25 public schools in Lushoto District.

Green future: reforestation in the Magamba Reserve

Reforestation success! Over 2,000 indigenous trees planted in the Magamba Nature Forest Reserve. Community and nature united for a sustainable future.

We are pleased to provide an update on our current reforestation project in the Magamba Nature Forest Reserve. Our organisation has the unique ability to carry out extensive planting thanks to our extensive tree nursery, which offers a variety of indigenous tree species. After obtaining the necessary permits, we have started restoring degraded areas in the Kwai and Migambo Village areas adjacent to the reserve.

The Magamba Nature Forest Reserve, surrounded by 21 villages, plays an important role in our region. The involvement of the communities from these surrounding villages is crucial to the success of our conservation projects.

On 28 November 2023, we launched the project with the planting of 2,015 indigenous trees in the village of Migambo. This action involved 19 villagers who supported us as casual labourers. We also had the privilege of being visited by TFS (Tanzania Forest Service) officials, including a botanist who checked the planted tree species. The trees were planted on an area of 1.83 hectares.

The following indigenous tree species were planted in Migambo:

Syzygium guineense (Mshihwi) - 300 specimens
Bridelia micrantha (Muiza) - 325 specimens
Albizia schimperiana (Mshai) - 500 specimens
Rauvolfia caffra (Mueeti) - 400 pieces
Prunus africana (Mkomahoya) - 300 pieces
Podocarpus usambarensis (Mpodo) - 190 specimens

A total of 2,015 trees were planted.

The community is grateful for the support from the organisation "There For You" and is excited about the opportunity to restore parts of the Magamba Nature Forest Reserve as well as the employment opportunities that have arisen from participating in CYDO's tree planting campaign.

We are proud of the progress we have made and grateful for the continued support and commitment of all involved. Our goal remains to have a lasting and positive impact on the environment and communities surrounding the Magamba Nature Forest Reserve.
