Background

Daniela Ryf supports a foundation project in Nairobi, Kenya, a place where she has a long connection through her family - her step-mother is from Nairobi and her father lived and worked in Kenya over 20 years of his life. The work of the Paula Mercy Foundation was brought to her attention by her step-mother Sophie, and an in person visit at the end of 2022. The charity provides food, housing and education to 30 orphaned children and relies on donations for support.

Idea

The Paula Mercy Foundation was founded by an incredible woman named Paula Mwangi, who passed away in October, 2023. She was a teacher by training who was paralyzed after a spinal operation yet still supported 30 neglected children, providing them with food, education, and a safe place to sleep.
Daniela is currently fundraising to secure the long-term sustainability of the orphanage. This involves offering immediate assistance for essential supplies such as food, water, and electricity. Additionally, she is contributing to the construction and upkeep of the infrastructure, including the installation of stoves, and ensuring the safety of the children by addressing necessary repairs to their dormitories.

Implementation

Funds raised will be allocated to support various essential needs, including school fees, food provisions, and the maintenance of the orphanage's physical infrastructure. To provide food, Daniela Ryf is partnering with Farm to Feed in order to deliver food to the Paula Mercy orphanage. For $14.50 Farm to Feed are able to provide one solid meal per day to each of the children at the orphanage for the entire year. This will give children access to a mixed basket of cabbage, kale, potato, carrot, onion and tomato. In addition to feeding the children, surplus funds raised will be used to fix critical infrastructure repairs to the children’s bedrooms and refrigeration equipment to be used for preserving foods.
Farm to Feed
Food loss and malnutrition leads to unacceptable high costs - direct and indirect - on individuals, families, nations, healthcare systems and economies. At Farm to Feed, they believe access to affordable healthy food is a basic human right, not a privilege. In sub-Saharan Africa, nearly 50% of fruit and vegetables never make it to market for consumption. This means lost income for farmers and economies. 32% of Kenyans face food insecurity or poor nutrition. 26% of children are stunted which has an irreversible impact on cognitive and physical development. This is what Farm to Feed aim to solve by bringing nutritious produce directly from farmers to those who need it most.

Daniela Ryf recently visited her project in Kenya in person, gaining exciting insights into project implementation and discussing the support plan for the coming year. With the donations received, the Daniela Ryf Fund can make the following possible for the Paula Mercy Foundation orphanage in Kenya:

  • afripads" menstrual pads for every girl and woman at the orphanage
  • Repair of the leaking roof
  • Paying rent for the land for one year

  • Cover the electricity needs for one year

In Kenya, neglected children face the challenges of an insecure social and economic situation. The country struggles with resource scarcity and insecurity, which further exacerbates the precarious situation of these children. Many children have no home and many suffer from malnutrition. The aim of the project is not only to provide these orphans with basic needs such as food, shelter and education, but also to show them a sustainable way to improve their living conditions. It not only aims to provide short-term support, but also lays the foundations for a more stable long-term future for these children.
