Kipepeo Farm – Sustainable Agriculture to Empower Local Communities

Project SummaryKipepeo Farm is a project of the Kipepeo Family Foundation, aimed at creating social job opportunities and generating sustainable income for the organization. In the long term, the farm's revenue will help support families and children in the Kilimanjaro region independently of donations.

Background

In 2022, the Kipepeo Family Foundation acquired a fertile piece of land in a water-rich area at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Building on this foundation, essential infrastructure measures have already been completed, including a chicken coop for up to 1,000 laying hens, a pigsty, a small house with a toilet, as well as electricity and water supply. “So far, the Kipepeo Family Foundation’s work with street children, families, and in the area of education has been primarily funded by donations — money that is urgently needed but not always guaranteed. Generating financial income here in Tanzania will help us continue our work,” emphasizes Mariamu, a social worker at Kipepeo.

Idea

The Kipepeo Farm aims to create a stable income for the Kipepeo Family Foundation to independently finance social projects. The farm is intended not only to generate jobs but also to offer new opportunities to people facing difficult life situations. “It is crucial to utilize local resources and strengthen the local economy as a foundation for creating long-term solutions that empower the people of Tanzania to achieve self-reliance and independence,” says Joy Baumann, the founder of the Kipepeo Family Foundation.

Implementation

Starting in February 2025, the farm will begin operations with an initial stock of 800 laying hens, whose eggs will be sold to local restaurants, hotels, and markets. The poultry will be kept in a free-range, animal-friendly manner. The foundation is seeking a trustworthy local person to care for the animals, with the organization covering their salary for the first year. “I am confident that this project will be successful. Our farm is located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, in the area of the Chaga tribe, who are known to be the best businesspeople in the entire country,” explains Simba, the local farm manager.
For the first six months, the Kipepeo Family Foundation relies on financial support to set up the farm operations and ensure the well-being of the animals. The estimated costs amount to 18,748,000 TZS (approximately 6,889 USD), covering the following items:

  • Chicks: 2,160,000 TZS (794 USD)

  • Feed: 13,728,000 TZS (5,045 USD)

  • Medical care: 1,685,000 TZS (620 USD)

  • Maintenance: 1,175,000 TZS (432 USD)
