Agroforestry4Future Training in Uganda
Project Summary
Help for self-reliance: Young women and men are given the opportunity to participate in an agroforestry training program at our agricultural partner institute in Nandere. This enables them to establish regenerative and highly productive agriculture in their villages, build their own livelihoods, and actively contribute to the protection of nature and the climate.
Background
In Uganda, 16 out of 46 million people live in extreme poverty. High population growth, large influxes of refugees from South Sudan and Somalia, monoculture farming, severe deforestation, soil erosion, and climate change exacerbate the country’s food insecurity. According to the Human Development Index (HDI 2021/22), Uganda ranks 166th out of 190 countries.
Additional challenges related to food security and agriculture include:

- Increasingly unstable and extreme weather conditions with severe impacts on monoculture farming.
- Large-scale use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in monoculture systems.
- Lack of knowledge about sustainable food production among farmers, alongside a scarcity of training opportunities and demonstration farms.
- Migration of young people from rural areas to cities due to a lack of jobs and future prospects.
- Limited or nutritionally unbalanced meals often provided in schools.
- Low awareness of the health benefits of a balanced diet.
Idea
Together with agroforestry pioneers and an agricultural partner institute in Nandere (1.5 hours north of Kampala, Uganda), we have developed an agroforestry training program. Motivated young women and men from across the region can participate in the program without admission requirements.
Project goal: Within four years, the program aims to train 20 educators and staff, as well as 60 young women and men, in regenerative agroforestry practices. Graduates, supported by local agroforestry trainers, will establish regenerative farming systems in 15 villages and share their knowledge with 36 larger schools.
Long-term project impacts:
Crowdfunding goal: Covering 12% of the project costs for the agroforestry training program in Uganda for 12 months, starting in June 2025.

Long-term project impacts:
- Promotion of biodiversity and improvement of soil fertility, contributing to active nature and climate protection.
- Strengthening food security and raising awareness about regenerative farming and healthy nutrition.
- Creating economic opportunities for young people and rural communities in the districts of Luweero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola.

Implementation
Since mid-2023, the educators and staff at the agricultural training institute have been training the first young program graduates in regenerative and highly productive agroforestry systems. Topics covered include subsistence farming, commercial agriculture (coffee, bananas, pineapples), fodder production, and school garden models.
A 9,900 m² agroforestry demonstration site serves as a practical learning space, showcasing key agroforestry principles such as high biodiversity, accelerated growth, stratification (layering), natural crop succession, pest control, year-round soil coverage, photosynthesis, and plant material reproduction. The site also demonstrates the regeneration and restoration of water, carbon/CO2, and nutrient cycles. Essential reproduction resources in this system include trees, grass, self-produced seeds, and microorganisms—resilient assets protected from inflation and currency devaluation.
