A new school for the village of Siaqol
Project SummaryIn Siaqol, a remote village in the mountains of Afghanistan, children and young people will finally be able to learn in a safe, warm, and well-equipped school building. Currently, lessons are held in severely damaged rooms under precarious conditions – without heating, furniture, or toilets. With this project, the organization Compassion in the Right Place wants to work with the local population to build a new school building by the end of 2025. The goal is to raise $15,000 in donations to enable the construction of the first stage.
Background
Siaqol is a small village in the mountains of Afghanistan, in the province of Ghazni. Currently, the children and young people of Siaqol and the surrounding area are taught in two small rooms. The older part of the school is largely dilapidated and looks like a ruin, but is still used for teaching due to lack of space. Ten young people squeeze into two school desks, and it is freezing cold in the small room. A white sheet in a wooden frame serves as a blackboard. Their younger classmates in the second building have no desks or chairs at all; they sit on the cold floor of the classroom and write on their knees. The walls are their blackboards, covered in several layers of writing in Persian. There is no heating or toilets.

David, the co-founder of our aid organization, comes from Afghanistan and is very familiar with the conditions at the school in Siaqol and the challenges there. He knows how motivated the students are to attend classes. We are convinced that the school is very important for the future of all girls and boys and that the students in Siaqol and the surrounding area need better learning conditions. We would therefore like to build a new, larger school building to replace the two existing buildings.

All children and young people, currently 70, should be able to attend classes in the new school building. The new school will have electricity, heating, and separate toilets for boys and girls. The classrooms will be furnished with tables, chairs, and a blackboard. We are collecting donations and working closely with local residents and experts to implement the project. Construction of the first phase is scheduled to begin at the end of summer 2025, with the first floor of the school due to be completed by the end of 2025.

We collect donations to implement projects in these countries that make life easier and better for poor people. Our goal is to provide as much direct aid as possible through our own local contacts. All of our members work on a voluntary basis. This enables us to keep administrative costs and expenses to a minimum. Compassion in the Right Place is an association within the meaning of Article 60 of the Swiss Civil Code (ZGB).

Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world, marked by decades of conflict, political instability, and severely limited government infrastructure. In many places, basic requirements such as safe school buildings, qualified teaching staff, and educational materials are lacking, especially in the education sector, which contributes to the reproduction of poverty in the long term. In rural areas such as Siaqol, children are often forced to learn under precarious conditions or to forego schooling altogether. Projects such as the planned school construction therefore make an essential contribution to securing education as a fundamental right and creating prospects for the future. Through participatory implementation with local partners and the targeted expansion of infrastructure, not only can access to education be improved, but a sense of stability and self-efficacy can also be strengthened among the affected population.
