Educate to Protect.
Project SummaryThe ‘Educate to Protect’ project supports disadvantaged children in Kabumba, Uganda, by promoting their enrolment in affordable schools, providing basic school materials and raising awareness in the community about children's rights and education. The aim is to protect children from exploitation such as early marriage and child labour.
Background
Uganda faces a significant challenge: approximately 700,000 children of primary school age are not attending school, according to the Uganda National Household Survey (2019/2020). These children are vulnerable to child marriages, labor, and exploitation. By 2020, 25% of under aged girls were forced in early marriages, 35% of preteen boys where involved in child labour.

Idea
A recent internal survey in Kabumba and neighboring rural communities revealed a disturbing trend. Parents often permit child marriages, labor, and other injustices, citing lack of education as the primary reason. They believe that without education, their children have no viable future.
However, the survey also showed that the majority of parents are eager to enroll their children in school, but lack the means, insight, and necessary support. This is where we step in – as guardians and advocates – to challenge this narrative and create positive change.
Our initiative focuses on three key areas:
Building on the success of our first phase, which had a profound impact and marked a huge step towards our overall goal, we're now expanding our efforts to reach even more vulnerable children. By doing so, we eliminate the excuses that perpetuate injustices against children. We protect their rights, prevent exploitation, and secure brighter futures.

Implementation
Our project, 'Educate to Protect,' will be implemented in Kabumba Village, situated on the outskirts of Wakiso District. This rural community faces significant development challenges, including a high population density and widespread illiteracy. Kabumba Village has over 100 children, many of whom lack access to education, making them vulnerable to child exploitation, including child labour and early marriage, from as early as pre-teen years.
To ensure long-term impact and sustainability, we implement our projects in two strategic phases.
Part 1: Collaboration and Enrolment
Part 2: Community Engagement and Awareness
Budget Allocation.
Total Budget: 4000 CHF
Our project will run for one school entry period, with the goal of enrolling children in school as resources allow. Since the school year has three entry points (one per term), we will focus on preparing for the May 2025 entry point. To achieve this, we will work from January to April to mobilize resources and make necessary arrangements.
