project summaryThe project of the Emashie association, founded by Adam Issah, aims to offer disadvantaged children in Ghana free schooling from kindergarten to secondary school. This goal is being realised through the construction of a school building in three stages.

Background

Schools in Ghana are officially free, but school uniforms, school books, transport and meals for each child have to be paid for by the parents. Often these costs cannot be afforded by the parents. As a result, many children do not go to primary school and find it difficult to work without an education.
We have bought the land on the outskirts of the huge and rapidly growing metropolis of Accra. We have already started building there. The place is rather rural with a good security situation.

Idea

Adam Issah, a Ghanaian who has been living and working in Switzerland for 23 years, and the Emashie association provide free schooling for street children and children from difficult family backgrounds from kindergarten to secondary school. A vocational school is even planned for the future.
We are building in three stages:
1st stage on the ground floor for 4 classes and 80 children (2 infant classes and 2 primary school classes and the necessary ancillary rooms and outdoor spaces. Costs: CHF 60,000.
2nd stage on the 1st floor for a further 4 classes for CHF 40,000.
3rd stage on the 2nd floor with solar roof for CHF 70,000. When completed, our school building will accommodate 12 classes.

Implementation

5 enthusiasts, all with a connection to Ghana and its culture, founded the Emashie association in mid-2023 with the aim of building a school building in three stages, in which we can teach up to 12 school classes of 20 pupils each.
With the hoped-for donations of CHF 15,000, we can push ahead with the shell construction of the first stage as part of the total costs of CHF 60,000 for the first stage. The foundations will be completed by July 2024 and have already been financed.

Initiators

The initiator is Adam Issah, a Ghanaian who has lived and worked in Switzerland for 23 years and bought a piece of land in Accra years ago to build a school building on. As he is unable to finance the construction and maintenance of the school from his own resources and no one else can help locally, the following five people have joined forces and founded the Emashie association:
Georges Benz, President, entrepreneur
Adam Issah, construction worker
Willi Hauenenstein-Suter, musician and event entrepreneur
Verena Hauenstein, works in the healthcare sector
Brigitte Suter-Hauenstein, Msc & Master of Arts for special Need Education
