Women & nature: Empowerment in the Mombo ward
Project SummaryThe Social Community Forum has launched a project to support women in Mombo Ward, Tanzania. By planting vegetable gardens and fast-growing fruit trees, the project aims to improve the quality of life by enabling families to earn a stable income and ensure access to food and education.
Background
In the Mombo ward of Korogwe District Tanzania, our community has been experiencing a severe drought, leading to a poor harvest by October 2023. This has resulted in over 200 families facing starvation due to reduced agricultural production and unpredictable rainfall, both consequences of climate change. This situation has been particularly challenging for widows who are single-handedly raising families. They have struggled to provide food, shelter, and education for their children. Consequently, the inability to meet school-related needs is contributing to an increasing number of children ending up on the streets.

We, as a Social Community Forum, an organization dedicated to assisting women and enhancing community welfare, have initiated a project aimed specifically at supporting women, particularly widows struggling to raise children. Our goal is to reduce the incidence of street children and early pregnancies among young girls, who, due to family poverty, are often compelled to leave school and marry. Our project also extends support to the wider community.
Our primary strategy involves creating gardens for vegetables and planting fast-growing fruit trees such as mangoes, oranges, and sugarcane. This initiative has already begun to yield positive results, enabling women who face challenges in raising families to generate income. The benefits of this project are also reaching the broader community.
Additionally, the project engages young people by offering them opportunities to earn income through fruit sales, while simultaneously ensuring they have access to food. It also supports pregnant women who face hardships, helping them obtain the nutrition necessary for their health.

Implementation
Our organization plans to launch the Mombo Ward Project in Tanzania by establishing vegetable gardens where we will grow onions, watermelons, zucchini, and cucumbers. These fast-growing crops will support community members and assist women who are raising children under difficult circumstances by providing essential nutrients, particularly for pregnant women.
Additionally, we will implement a project involving the planting of fruit trees that produce quickly and frequently. This initiative aims to increase production, thereby enabling rapid income generation to stabilize family incomes.
We are requesting $500 to establish 100 gardens and purchase 2,000 fruit trees. These resources will be used to support and uplift families in need. We believe that, in partnership with the there for you community, we can make this project a success.

Initiators
The project is an initiative of the Social Community Forum, a registered community-based organization in Tanzania that has been active since 2022. Our focus is on women's empowerment programs, including providing reproductive education to learning institutions, particularly primary and secondary schools in Mombo ward. In addition, we conduct training and awareness-raising activities and engage in tree planting, using both native and exotic species, to protect forests and water resources. This effort ensures that the community has access to water.
