#freedom2play girls football school league
Project SummaryThe GUFC Girls Football League was launched in Walvis Bay, Namibia, in 2023. In cooperation with the Playtime Namibia Trust, the project enables girls at 11 schools to participate in an organised football league. In addition to the sporting competition, the participants are supported with additional programmes in career guidance and mental health.
Background
Namibia, although categorised as a middle class country, faces significant challenges in terms of social inequality and poverty. Girls in particular can be disadvantaged due to traditional role models, limited access to education and restricted development opportunities. In Walvis Bay, these challenges are reflected, with many families facing financial difficulties.
In 2023, the GUFC Girls' Football League was successfully launched in cooperation with the Playtime Namibia Trust at schools in the coastal town of Walvis Bay in Namibia. Teachers were trained in a grassroots coaching course before the start of the project to lay the foundation for the girls' football league. In the first year, 25 teams from 11 schools took part in the U11, U13, U15 and U17 age groups. Over 260 girls were given the opportunity to prove themselves in competition, accompanied by free catering. Older age groups received courses in career guidance and mental health. Coaches received further qualifications, referee training was offered and schools were supported.

Idea
The idea behind the #freedom2play Girls football school league is to give girls in Namibia the opportunity to play in an organised league while gaining access to educational and development resources. By involving schools in environmental activities, such as clean ups or planting campaigns, among others, they were able to qualify for the league. The school league also serves as preparation and screening for regional selection.
The partnership with various organisations made it possible to provide schools with jerseys, training materials and balls to improve the infrastructure.
