Enabling education with bicycles
Project SummaryDue to the long distances to school and the lack of public transport, many children in Cambodia have no access to education. The aim is to change this with the help of bicycles.
Background
What do bicycles have to do with school education? Very much. School routes in Cambodia are often arduous. Public transport is not available everywhere, certainly not outside the cities. It is not uncommon for the route to determine how many days a child can come to school, whether he or she comes at all, indeed- whether he or she is enrolled at all!
Against this background, the bicycle is an important and efficient tool for a Cambodian child: by cycling to and from school, children have more energy and free time to learn. The bicycle provides more safety for children than having to walk from home in the rural area, especially in rural areas where the nearest primary school is usually kilometres away. But owning and maintaining a bicycle is a luxury for most families.

Idea
For this reason, we would like to provide selected children with a bicycle. We select school children according to the following selection criteria:
Our selection criteria for learners.
1. children with disabilities (physical impairment)
2. children who live more than 4 km away from the school
3. poor children (parents are poor card holders)
4. children living in difficult conditions (violent domestic family, divorce of one of the parents, children separated from one of the parents due to work restrictions).
5. children who are about to drop out of school and need assistance with transportation.
Student Somnang said:
"Having a bike makes my life much easier. I didn't have to get up so much in the morning and be so tired in the evening when I got home from school. I also didn't have mud on my feet during the monsoon season! So I have more time to help my mom with daily chores, like cleaning the house in the morning and opening the store."

Implementation
We work with 52 primary schools in Prasat Bakong district, which is home to some of the poorest communities in the country. Our Velo Project has worked closely with key stakeholders such as the Head of Education, village and community leaders and other community representatives for many years to select eligible students to receive a bicycle. Each child is visited and assessed by our team to ensure they are the right beneficiary and that our bicycles will make a strong contribution to support and motivate them to continue to strive for higher education and actively participate in shaping the future for the country of Cambodia. At Kamboo Project, we have provided more than 300 school children with bicycles since 2018. We work hand in hand with two bicycle companies that support us: VeloPlus and woom.
A bicycle including a transport basket and a workshop course (each child learns how to repair the tyres themselves and replacement material is deposited at the schools) costs approx. USD 50. This crowdfunding project can therefore support 70 more pupils with a bicycle.

Initiators
Kamboo Project is a Swiss non-profit association, which has been conducting projects in Siem Reap province, Cambodia, in rural districts, since 2014. In addition to this clear geographical focus, we limit our activities to three core areas: Drinking Water and Sanitation, Sustainable Construction and Renovation, and Education. Kamboo Project follows the principle of "helping people to help themselves" - with our projects, we help local people to improve their living conditions themselves in the medium to long term.
