Movement for All: Motor Skills Park for Children with Disabilities in Nepal
Project SummaryThe Disability Centre in Lokaha, Nepal, provides a safe home and education for children with disabilities. Now, a special motor skills park is to be built so that the children can promote their physical health. Help us and enable the children to be more independent!
Background
Nepal is a Hindu country where people with disabilities (PWDs) are often stigmatised in the system. For many families, a disability is a punishment caused by bad karma in the previous life. Therefore, PWDs are discriminated against and disadvantaged, especially in educationally deprived circles. In some regions it goes so far that affected people have to live in the stables with the cattle. They get scraps of food and no education or support.
Children with disabilities are particularly disadvantaged and usually do not receive the care they need. Often they cannot attend school because the infrastructure is not there and they are constantly dependent on others.

Idea
The Chay Ya network of associations raises awareness and gives children with disabilities access to education and a safe home by building disability centres. These centres are found high up in the Himalayas to Nepal's lowlands.
In Lokaha, in the Rautahat district, on the border with India, there is such a centre (Click here for project description). 10 children live there, receive physiotherapeutic support and attend the local school. What the centre is still missing is a motor skills park.
This park will consist of various stations that will enable the children to develop their physical skills independently. This includes, for example, a climbing frame, a slide and swings that meet national safety standards. An extra-wide, barrier-free access path from the main building to the motor skills park also allows children in wheelchairs to access the site independently. This not only promotes physical health, but also the children's self-confidence and independence. Many children experience mobility and self-determination for the first time.

Implementation
The Chay Ya association network will take care of the implementation of the motor skills park. A permanent team in Nepal, consisting exclusively of locals, is familiar with the local cultural and linguistic conditions. The network has already built the centre in Lokaha and knows both the children and the local decision makers. A building permit has also already been obtained and a suitable site selected on the grounds of the centre.
We estimate 12'000 CHF for the construction of the motor skills park. The sum of 2'000 CHF, which we are collecting via there-for-you.com, will be used as a contribution for material and wages. People from the region will be employed for the construction work. The construction of the motor skills park is scheduled to start in January 2023 and will take three months.

Initiators
Chay Ya Switzerland is responsible for fundraising for the motor park. The association was founded in September 2016 and is registered as a non-profit organisation. The first loose cooperation with Chay Ya Austria already started in 2015 after the devastating earthquake in Nepal. The foundation of a sister organisation in Switzerland was the next step to formally establish the cooperation with Chay Ya Austria and Chay Ya Nepal. It goes without saying that we work with our sister organisation as equal partners in our projects.
Chay Ya Switzerland is mainly concerned with the development and elaboration of projects in the areas of water, education, hygiene and health.
