Riding with SIBO - to Lisbon with bowel disease

Project Summary‘Riding with SIBO’ is a social project initiated by Marc, a 33-year-old sports scientist who has been suffering from SIBO/IMO for over five years. To raise awareness of this little-researched bowel disease, he is planning a fundraising ride on a gravel bike from Lake Constance to Lisbon in spring 2025. The donations collected will support research at Inselspital Bern and directly benefit those affected.

Background

Health is not everything, but without health, everything is nothing! The gut is considered the center of well-being and the gateway to health.

SIBO/IMO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth/Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth) is characterized by an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine, which can cause severe bloating, digestive issues, and inflammatory processes in the body, potentially damaging the intestinal lining. The release of toxins and gas production by these bacteria places a heavy burden on the immune system and liver, affecting various regulatory mechanisms and functions of the body. Additionally, those affected experience a significant reduction in their quality of life and often face high psychological stress, which may manifest as anxiety, depression, and exhaustion.

Depending on the severity, intensive, mostly alternative therapies are often required, which can be lengthy and challenging, with a high relapse rate.

In Europe, targeted research on SIBO/IMO is lacking, and therapy recommendations are largely based on research from the US and Australia. Despite evidence that it accounts for around 70% of cases diagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome, SIBO/IMO receives insufficient attention in society. Currently, medical access to the small intestine remains difficult ("black box"), and conventional treatments are mostly limited to antibiotics, which, over the long term, offer little sustainable benefit and can promote an unhealthy microbial environment. Many sufferers remain silent, feel dismissed by doctors, and struggle to find help for their condition.

Idea

With my social project 'Riding with SIBO', I aim to undertake fundraising bike rides across Europe with a gravel bike to raise awareness for the functional bowel disorder SIBO/IMO and to collect donations. These funds will support research at the Inselspital Bern / Gastroenterology Center for SIBO-related projects. Additionally, donations will directly benefit those affected by providing support through SIBO-specialized companies (for more information, see the attachment).

Implementation

I plan to start my first fundraising ride from Lake Constance to Lisbon in spring 2025 (May/June) and share updates from my four- to five-week journey on Instagram (@riding_with_sibo) and YouTube (@Riding_with_SIBO). For the long-term success of my project, I will need a gravel bike, appropriate weatherproof cycling clothing, shoes and a helmet, gravel bike gear (bike bags), a small tent and sleeping bag, a GPS device, and a GoPro camera. Additionally, financial resources will be needed for sponsor logos on the jerseys, accommodations (campsites/hostels), daily meals, travel insurance, and a return flight to Zurich (including sports equipment).

Initiators

My name is Marc, I’m 33 years old, and I studied sports science (currently pursuing my master's). I've been suffering from SIBO for over five years, specifically a severe form of IMO, which is likely caused by a Lyme disease infection that affected my autonomic nervous system (leading to motility disorders in the colon) and a pancreatic insufficiency. I’ve undergone countless therapies, hospital stays, and examinations, and have seen how drastically this illness has changed my life.
Unfortunately, many physical activities that used to bring me great joy are no longer possible due to the illness. Cycling was one of the few things I could still do, and it gave me a sense of freedom. It’s important to me to support research and help others who are suffering, as they face immense physical strain and significant personal expenses for their therapies and treatments.
Further details about the cooperation with Inselspital Bern, the project’s sponsors, and the detailed pathophysiology of the illness can be found in the attached PDF.
