Community and School Food Access

Many thanks for your support, which meant we were able to complete the project successfully.
project summaryIn the community of Kiwangwa, Tanzania, the Usambara Forestry and Eco Tourism Forum is combating food shortages and the consequences of deforestation through a comprehensive fruit tree project. The aim is to plant 10,000 trees to improve food security, reduce school dropouts and protect the environment.

Background

In the Kiwangwa community in Tanzania, we are facing food shortages caused by erratic rainfall and increased agricultural activities near the Saadani Nature Reserve. This has led to the cutting down of many trees and pollution of the soil through the excessive use of herbicides and pesticides. Soil erosion from deforestation further exacerbated the problem. These circumstances have led to poor nutrition and food shortages in the community and surrounding schools, which in turn has led to an increase in school dropouts. From January 2020 to June 2021, there were 500 school dropouts in Kiwangwa district alone. The Usambara Forestry and Eco Tourism Forum responded by launching a fruit tree project where orange, mandarin, mango and pineapple trees were planted in schools and the community to improve livelihoods and food security. By the end of November 2023, the number of school dropouts in Kiwangwa County had fallen to 20.

Idea

We are in the process of reforesting the areas in Bago village that have been severely affected by deforestation. Our long-term goal is to plant 300,000 trees and so far we have planted 45,000 trees to cover more than 300 hectares of land in Kiwangwa district. 2500 animal species are expected to regain a stable habitat through this project and 4000 people will gain economic benefits from the project if we achieve our goal. We want to support farmers with well-equipped farming systems, better agroforestry approaches and the use of organic fertilisers to stop deforestation and reduce over-reliance on forest resources. 15 Water resources near the Saadani Nature Reserve that supply water to the schools and community will be restored by planting the best water storing plants to ensure a sustainable water supply to the schools and community, which we will use to irrigate the fruit trees.

Implementation

We run a tree nursery where seedlings are grown. These seedlings are then sent to various planting locations, including the farms of four local schools - Kiwangwa Secondary School, Kiwangwa Primary School, Kwawema Primary School and Bago Primary School. In addition, fruit trees will be planted on the farms of the Kiwangwa community and in the Saadani Nature Reserve. A total of 10,000 fruit trees will be planted through this crowdfunding project, with 8,000 trees planted at schools and 2,000 trees planted at community farms. The selection includes mango trees, orange trees, mandarin trees, avocado trees and pine trees. It is worth noting that the fruit trees bear fruit quickly and therefore quickly provide a yield for the students and the community.
Our board and members are actively involved in planting, monitoring and caring for the trees, both in schools and in the community. This ensures a high survival rate of our trees, especially in schools where we involve teachers and students through their environmental clubs to actively participate in protecting the trees. We have assigned specific areas for members to get involved in to ensure that the trees are carefully monitored.
